Building Opposite Curve Theatre

While Leicester has developed its cultural quarter and delivered brilliant developments such as the Curve theatre and the renovation of the old Odeon Cinema, now called the Athena, there is still an issue with other buildings bringing the area down.

If you were to stand outside the Curve Theatre you would enjoy a vision of the Athena on your left and a tree lined path to St Georges Church ahead, but there will also be one building that blights the wonderful vision in front of you.

The building in question sits to the left of the entrance to the St Georges Churchyard and looks as though it is a late nineteenth century building. It is a building that carries all the wonders of aesthetic design associated with old buildings from the time, well... would do if cleaned up and renovated to an acceptable level.

Currently the building is run down and filthy to look at, it also has damage to its side seen from the courtyard. Current tenants for the building include a snooker business and a private member nightclub called G-Spot (Ill let you decide on the type of club this is).

My feeling is that this building should be high on the agenda of the Leicester City Council for renovation and improvement, after all why would you spend over fifty million on a state of the art theatre only to have it face a run down building housing a “specialist” members only nightclub. It doesn’t give a great overview of the city when finishing a great theatrical play to walk out into the street and see the building opposite, imposing and dirty.

Now I am not saying the nightclub or snooker hall should be kicked out of the building, but if the building was renovated and money spent on improving the look and feel of the building it will improve the reputation of the businesses operating from within too.

This is actually a really nice building in my view that just needs some care and attention to bring back its former glory.
